Frequently asked QUestions

Jordan Wheatley’s top three priorities are investing in our schools, tackling the affordability crisis, and securing our future.

• Investing in Our Schools: As a teacher, Jordan sees firsthand how Texas’s school funding system falls short of what students and educators need. He will fight to increase the state’s basic allotment so school funding keeps pace with inflation, supports teachers, and gives every student the opportunity to succeed.

• Tackling the Affordability Crisis: Jordan knows how hard families work to make ends meet. Growing up, he watched his parents struggle to provide for their family. Today, rising housing costs, property taxes, and healthcare expenses are putting even more pressure on Texans. He will fight for practical solutions that lower the cost of living and help families stay in the communities they call home.

• Securing Our Future: Texas House District 67 is growing rapidly, and our infrastructure must keep up. Jordan will work with local leaders to address long-term needs, particularly water supply and roads, and strengthen communication among municipalities so communities have the resources to plan responsibly for growth.

Jordan understands that Texas families are being squeezed by rising costs. He believes housing affordability must be a central part of the solution.

He will advocate for property tax relief, including limits on home appraisal increases, while pushing the state to adequately fund public schools so the burden does not fall so heavily on homeowners. He also supports making it easier to build starter homes and preventing corporate investors from buying up and renting out new homes, pricing working families out of homeownership.

Texans who work hard should have a fair chance to afford a home in the communities where they live and work. Jordan wants the next generation to have that same opportunity.

Jordan believes District 67 faces three major long-term challenges: affordability, public school funding, and infrastructure.

Affordability: Families are struggling with the cost of housing, property taxes, and healthcare, just as his parents did. Jordan will advocate for practical, long-term solutions that help families remain in their communities. He believes progress requires serious conversations across party lines and lasting solutions rather than temporary fixes.

Public School Funding: Texas state government must live up to its legal requirement to adequately fund public education. When the state falls short, local taxpayers pay more, and some school districts have had to close neighborhood schools. As a teacher, Jordan sees the effects of inadequate funding firsthand. He will fight for sustainable school funding that supports students and educators without shifting more of the burden onto homeowners.

Infrastructure and Water: District 67’s rapid growth is putting pressure on roads, water supplies, and other essential infrastructure. We will face a water shortage here in North Texas in the next 5 years. Jordan will work with local governments to plan for future demand, invest in long-term infrastructure, and support water conservation. Growth should strengthen our communities, not overwhelm the systems families depend on.

Jordan supports expanding Medicaid eligibility because access to healthcare should not force families into financial hardship.

When we talk about Medicaid expansion, we aren’t just talking about numbers, we are talking about our neighbors right here in McKinney. There’s Cal, a little boy fighting for his life. But instead of being able to focus entirely on his recovery, his parents are being forced to spend thousands of dollars out of their own pockets every single month just to keep him alive.

Texas is the world’s 8th largest economy, but it has one of the highest uninsured rates in the nation. Expanding Medicaid could bring substantial federal healthcare funding into Texas, help eligible Texans access coverage, and provide critical support to rural hospitals.

For Jordan, this is about putting people first. He believes Texas should pursue policies that expand access to care, strengthen healthcare systems, and help families avoid financial devastation when medical emergencies arise.

Jordan believes strong public schools are one of Texas’s most important economic investments. When students have access to quality education, they gain the skills to succeed in the workforce, start businesses, and help drive innovation.

Well-funded schools can expand opportunities in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, robotics, and the arts. Jordan supports strengthening Classroom-to-Career Pathways so students can connect what they learn in school with the skills and opportunities available in the workforce.

Strong neighborhood schools also help communities attract families, workers, and businesses. Families look at school quality first when deciding where to live. By supporting educators, we create an environment where curiosity turns into industry, keeping Texas at the cutting edge of the global market.

Jordan Wheatley says there is a massive disconnect between our state’s resources and what it spends on education. Texas has the world’s 8th largest economy, yet we rank 43th in the nation  for how we fund our students. This means that Texas is overwhelmingly underfunding our students and underfunding our future. What this looks like is textbooks held together by tape, ballooning class sizes, and neighborhood schools being forced to close their doors, while the state sits on a multi-billion dollar surplus.

If we want to keep our economy at the top of the world stage, we can't keep our education funding at the bottom of the national list. You can’t build a first-class workforce on a second-class budget!

The state’s constitutional mandate is to provide an 'efficient' system of public schools. There is nothing efficient about forcing districts into bankruptcy or watching our best teachers leave the profession because they can’t afford to live in the communities where they teach. It’s time we stop settling for 'good enough' and start funding our schools like the economic engines they actually are! Our students need us now more than ever.

Jordan will fight for meaningful investment in public education because students deserve the resources to succeed, teachers deserve support, and Texas’s future depends on the strength of its schools.

Jordan believes when tax payer dollars are going to private schools through the education savings account program, then transparency and public accountability must accompany public funding. Private schools should be held to the same standards, rules and laws that public schools are! This means they take the same tests, are required to provide the same services, and evaluated in the same way that public schools are.

He also believes policymakers should carefully consider how participating schools are held accountable for educational outcomes, student protections, and the services they provide. Jordan believes public policy should put students first and ensure taxpayers can see whether their investment is delivering results.

Teachers, first responders, young families, and other working Texans need more affordable housing options. Jordan supports exploring incentives, grants, and tax credits that help communities encourage starter homes and missing-middle income housing, including duplexes, townhomes, and other options between single-family homes and large apartment complexes. He supports preventing corporate investors from buying up and renting out new homes, pricing working families out of homeownership.

He also believes the state can help communities overcome barriers to new housing by investing in essential infrastructure, including water systems and roads.

Jordan believes Texas must address its housing shortage without unnecessarily doing what SB 840 does, which is undermine local control.  Jordan will listen to local leaders and residents who understand their communities’ needs. State and local governments should work together, with local leaders and residents having a  meaningful voice in decisions that affect their communities.

Jordan does not look to politicians for inspiration. Growing up, he watched political decisions leave communities behind, and that experience made him skeptical of a political system that too often puts partisan interests ahead of people.

The people he truly admires are the ones who show up every single day when the system wasn’t designed for them to succeed in the first place. He admires the teachers in our schools who give everything they have to their students, the first responders who are there the second we need them, and the families in the district who never stop fighting for their children’s future.

He is especially inspired by the students in his own classroom. They bring a level of kindness and creativity to the world that we could use a lot more of in Austin. His admiration belongs to the people who face adversity head on and keep going anyway. They are the ones who show up, and they are the reason he is showing up to run for this office.

Jordan Wheatley is running to bring the perspective of a classroom teacher and community member to the Texas Legislature. He believes District 67 needs a representative focused on the everyday concerns of working families: affordable housing, strong public schools, reliable infrastructure, and access to healthcare.

Jordan believes state government should partner with local communities rather than unnecessarily dictate how they address local challenges. He will work to ensure that the needs of students, families, educators, and other community members are heard in Austin.

His commitment is to the people he seeks to represent. Jordan is asking voters to send a representative to the Texas House who will listen, work toward practical solutions, and put the needs of the district first.

Jordan Wheatley wants to get big money out of Texas politics. His vote isn't for sale to corporate political action committees or special interests. He didn't get into this race to serve them. He got into it to serve the people right in front of him. As a teacher, he buys classroom supplies with his own money. Meanwhile, an out of state billionaire gave Governor Greg Abbott $10 million to defeat Republican state legislators who opposed school vouchers, and the next year the Legislature passed a $1 billion private school voucher program, including for families already paying private tuition. He will work to close tax loopholes for large corporations while keeping Texas a good place to do business. In Texas House District 67, he will hold regular town halls so his constituents have a direct line to their representative.
